Northern Mohave Rattlesnake AKA “Mojave Green”  (Crotalus scutulatus scutulatus)  VENOMOUS


Is the Northern Mohave rattlesnake common in the High Desert?  YES.  They are the most commonly encountered venomous species in Southern California’s Victor Valley/High Desert region, at elevations below 4500 feet. The common name “Mojave Green” refers to the “green” hue seen in many individuals but is not always present.  Many are shades of tan, brown, and white.  Neonate and juvenile snakes are often much darker in color than their adult counterparts. 

How toxic are “Mojave Greens? 

This species possesses the very potent “Mojave Type A” venom, and is considered one of the most lethal species in North America.   

Contrary to urban legend,  Mohave rattlesnakes do not “chase” people.
